CBD & politics
Several parties support the public’s wish for better framework conditions for the availability of CBD. The former governing parties see no need for this.
According to a current survey commissioned by us, more than 3/4 of the Austrian population want the new government to create framework conditions for the broad availability of CBD. The survey showed that CBD has long since arrived in the mainstream of the population. Now the parties have also been asked about it. Result: Five parties – SPÖ, NEOS, Liste Jetzt, Grüne and KPÖ – unanimously support the public’s wish. The former governing parties ÖVP and FPÖ, on the other hand, want to continue their restrictive course and see no need for better framework conditions for producers and consumers of CBD products. These two parties also do not want to lift the ban on the sale of foods containing CBD – issued at the time by former minister Hartinger-Klein. The ÖVP also explicitly opposes the legalisation of “medical hemp”. CBD is classified as harmless by the WHO and is freely available in many European countries, provided that any THC content is below a certain limit. While in 2017 64% were still strictly against general cannabis legalisation (source: Peter Hajak), there is now already a majority in favour of general legalisation (54%).
“The survey shows that CBD cannabis has long since arrived in the mainstream of the population. It is up to the new government to ensure that CBD is freely available on the basis of the latest scientific findings and that there are uniform quality standards.”
