What is the cannabinoid CBN?

CBN is short for cannabinol and is one of many cannabinoids in the hemp plant. Although cannabinol was discovered a long time ago, it never really became widely known. It was even once thought to be responsible for the feeling of intoxication. Today, however, we know that THC (tetrahydrocannabinol) is responsible for the intoxicating effect of cannabis.

How is it produced?

Unlike cannabidiol (CBD), cannabinol (CBN) is not a natural component of the hemp plant but the result of an oxidation process of tetrahydrocannabinol (THC). CBN is formed when THC is broken down by heat, air and/or light.

Is CBN intoxicating too?

Unlike THC, CBN is not psychoactive, which means that it does not cause intoxication. However, there are indications that CBN could have a psychoactive effect in very large quantities. Is CBN legal?

As CBN is a by-product of THC, the question of its legality arises. However, CBN is legal because it is not listed in the 1971 Convention on Psychotropic Substances.

This means that it is not classified as psychoactive and is therefore not subject to the same legal restrictions as THC, which is classified as a controlled substance in many countries because of its psychoactive effect. What is the difference from CBD?

Unlike cannabinol, CBD occurs naturally and can be cultivated independently as an industrial hemp plant. In recent years, CBD has increasingly become the focus of research and has been studied. There are now a number of studies that shed light on the positive effects of CBD. In addition, there is a wide range of different CBD products worldwide. Research on cannabinol, meanwhile, is still in its infancy. So far, no harmful side effects are known.

A few study results on CBN

There are studies suggesting that the cannabinoid has a calming effect that can relieve insomnia. In one study with rats, the use of CBN showed relief of muscle and joint pain. It was also found that the pain relief was even better when cannabidiol and cannabinol were taken together.
