CBD Oil for Depression & Stress: Research and Legal Status

Stress and low mood – an issue of our time

Stress, exhaustion and depressive moods affect many people in Austria. At the same time, interest in plant-based ingredients such as cannabidiol (CBD) is growing. We summarise the current state of knowledge – factually, without any recommendation for use.

What does research say about CBD and stress?

Cannabidiol (CBD) is a non-intoxicating ingredient of the hemp plant. Preclinical studies are investigating the interaction of CBD with the body’s own endocannabinoid system, which is involved in stress regulation, sleep and mood, among other things.

An observational study by Shannon et al., published in The Permanente Journal in 2019, describes subjective changes in sleep and anxiety parameters in the people studied. A review by Blessing et al. (2015, Neurotherapeutics) systematises early indications of anxiolytic effects of CBD in experimental settings.

Important: These studies are small, often not placebo-controlled and cannot be transferred to oral cosmetic products. They do not prove any therapeutic effect in the sense of a medicine.

CBD and depressive mood – what do we know?

Reviews such as Garcia-Gutierrez et al. (2020, Biomolecules) discuss indications from animal experiments of serotonergic mechanisms. Clinical data in humans are limited so far; larger randomised studies are still pending.

From a legal and scientific point of view, no statement on the treatment of depression can be derived from this.

    • Arzneimittelgesetz (AMG, Medicinal Products Act): Statements such as “helps with depression” or “relieves anxiety” are reserved exclusively for medicines.
    • LMSVG & HCVO: In the food/cosmetics sector, too, health-related promises of effect are strictly regulated. Statements about medical effects must be scientifically substantiated and legally permissible.
    • Oral cosmetics: CBD products from MAGU are approved as oral cosmetics – i.e. for external cosmetic use in the oral cavity, not as therapy.

What you can do yourself – without promises of healing

In the case of persistent stress or low mood, medical assessment, psychotherapy, exercise, sleep hygiene and social contacts are key building blocks. General well-being rituals such as mindfulness exercises, breathing techniques or regular time spent in daylight are often described in the scientific literature as supportive measures in everyday life.

    Our position as MAGU

We produce oral cosmetics, and our CBD oil is made from 100% Austrian hemp. We deliberately refrain from promises of effect in connection with mental health complaints – even if that would be “easier” from a marketing point of view. Information yes, promises of healing no.
