Germinating Cannabis Seeds Indoors: When Is the Best Time?

Spring is just around the corner, and many hobby gardeners are wondering when they should start germinating cannabis seeds indoors so that the plants can move outside in time for the outdoor season. Especially for growing in the open air, it is important not to sow the plants too early or too late, so that they are robust enough for the move outdoors. In this article you will find out when and how to start your hemp seeds indoors so that you can ideally put the plants outside in mid-May.

    1. The right time for propagation

If you want to plant your plants outdoors in mid-May, you should plan the right time carefully and start the seeds in good time. A good rule of thumb is to let the seeds germinate about 8 weeks before the planned planting out. This means that the optimal time for indoor germination is early to mid-March.

Why this time span? Plants need time to develop a stable root system, strong stems and healthy leaves.

If they are sown  too late, they can stretch too much in small propagation pots or become weak. Plants sown too early, on the other hand, may not be robust enough to adapt quickly to their surroundings outdoors.

    2. First germinate the hemp seeds

The first step is to get the hemp seeds to germinate. Here the individual stages are explained step by step.

The most important things you should know:

    • Kitchen paper method: Place the seeds between two damp paper towels, keep them constantly moist and store them in a warm place (20–25 °C). Germination usually takes 2–7 days.
    • Directly in soil: The seeds can be placed directly in seedling soil. The soil should be kept moist but not wet. A small propagator lid can keep the humidity high.

As soon as the seedlings show their first roots, they should be carefully planted in small pots with low-nutrient soil. Light is now essential to ensure strong growth.

    3. When can you repot?

After germination, the growth phase begins, during which the plants are prepared for their time outdoors.

    Tips on light:

    • Hemp plants need at least 18 hours of light per day during the growth phase.
    • A sunny spot on the windowsill is ideal. If there is not enough natural light, a good grow lamp (LED or fluorescent tubes) should ensure strong, even growth.
    • Recommended light intensity: at least 100–300 µmol/m²/s for the growth phase, with powerful LED lamps of 30–50 watts per plant being particularly suitable.
    • If the plants grow too tall, they are getting too little light and should be moved closer to the light source.

Important: temperature, humidity & air circulation:

    • Regular ventilation also prevents mould and improves the general health of the plants.
    • The ideal temperature is 20–26 °C.
    • A humidity of 50–70% is optimal.
    • A small fan on a low setting can help simulate a natural breeze. This strengthens the plants by making the stems thicker and more resilient. However, the fan should not be pointed directly at the plants but should provide gentle air movement in the room.

As soon as the plants have developed their first true leaves and the roots are pushing through the propagation pots, they should be moved into larger pots with special potting soil.

Keeping them in pots that are too small for too long can inhibit growth.

    4. The hardening-off phase – preparing for the move outdoors

About one to two weeks before the final planting out, the plants should be gradually accustomed to life outdoors. This process is called “hardening off” and helps the plants adapt to wind, direct sunlight and temperature fluctuations.

    Here’s how it works:

    • Days 1–3: Put the plants in partial shade for 1–2 hours a day.
    • Days 4–7: Slowly increase the time outdoors to 4–6 hours, also allowing sunlight and wind.
    • Days 8–14: Leave the plants outside all day, but still bring them inside at night.
    • After this phase, the plants are ready to be planted outdoors permanently.

    Conclusion

If you start your hemp seeds indoors from early to mid-March, you will have strong young plants by mid-May that are optimally prepared for life outdoors. Make sure they get enough light, warmth and air circulation during the growth phase. With careful hardening off, your plants will cope with the transition to the open field without any problems and continue to grow healthily.
