CBD and endometriosis

Finding an effective treatment for endometriosis is not easy and sometimes disappointing. Although endometriosis affects about 10% of all women according to the WHO, there is currently no real medical cure for this disease. For some sufferers, CBD has shown to be a useful and especially natural treatment option. In this blog article, we want to explain to you what endometriosis is and what positive contribution CBD can make.

What is endometriosis?

Endometriosis is a disease characterized by the presence of tissue outside the uterus. The tissue has similarities to the endometrium. Endometriosis causes a chronic inflammatory response that can lead to the formation of scar tissue (adhesions, fibrosis) in the pelvis and other parts of the body. This scar tissue often causes severe pain and inflammation, especially during the menstrual cycle, and can lead to the following symptoms:

  • Chronic abdominal pain
  • Bleeding between periods
  • Pain in the lower back or abdomen
  • Severe menstrual cramp
  • Pain during sex
  • Fatigue, bloating, nausea
  • Pain when emptying the bladder or bowels

Not all endometriosis is the same. Some suffer from more scar tissue and pain than others. Endometriosis can not only cause physical discomfort, but can also affect the reproductive system. If the disease affects the ovaries, it can lead to the formation of endometriomas or ovarian cysts. In severe cases, endometriosis can even lead to infertility or ovarian cancer. If endometriosis is suspected, medical consultation and treatment is useful and important.

And how does the disease endometriosis develop? This question is being studied by many scientists. There are several theories, but no concrete answer yet. It is believed that the exact causes of endometriosis are multifactorial. This means that many different factors contribute to its development.

How to treat endometriosis?

There is no medical cure, but there are various treatment methods. Common ones are: Pain-relieving medications, hormone therapies (e.g., the birth control pill), and surgery. Each option has its advantages as well as disadvantages and must be taken individually.

Surgery includes laparoscopic surgery or laparotomy. In both procedures, the problematic endometrial tissue is removed. In addition to a surgical risk, there is also a chance that the tissue will grow back. Thus, these surgeries are not really a long-term solution either.

CBD and endometriosis

CBD has also emerged as a possible and especially natural treatment option for endometriosis. In a small study of 484 women suffering from endometriosis, researchers* set out to investigate the efficacy and usefulness of natural strategies, including CBD, yoga, dietary changes, exercise, meditation and heat. CBD ranked at the top with an average score of 6.3 for effectiveness on a scale of 1 to 10. Studies like this show that CBD can be beneficial for endometriosis. But why is that?

Once CBD, a natural cannabinoid from the cannabis plant, enters the body, it reacts with the endocannabinoid system (ECS). The ECS is a biological system that is deeply rooted in many different systems of our body. To date, the ECS has been linked to the homeostasis of our appetite, sleep, mood, and memory. In addition to the endocannabinoid system, CBD also interacts with important receptors such as a pain receptor and a serotonin receptor. CBD is thought to have analgesic, anti-inflammatory, relaxing, and sedative effects. CBD is not a miracle cure for endometriosis, but it can alleviate a few of the symptoms mentioned above.

We are often asked which CBD products are best suited. We can not say that across the board, but we would like to recommend two CBD products:

  • Organic CBD Oil 10%: Our organic CBD oils contain the entire valuable spectrum of the hemp plant and have a particularly mild and pleasant taste. Through an innovative process, we extract the ingredients particularly gently and attach great importance to the highest quality. In the article “CBD Oil – Finding the right dosage“, we give you tips on how to find your perfect dose.
  • CBDeus Full Spectrum Serum 5%: With CBDeus Full Spectrum Serum 5%, we have succeeded in bringing a water-soluble formulation to the market that is particularly quickly and effectively absorbed by the body. The serum can be ingested, but also applied externally.

Conclusion

As mentioned above, there is still no medical cure for the disease endometriosis. Additionally, similar to CBD, research is in its infancy. The World Health Organization (WHO) recognizes the importance of endometriosis and its impact on people’s sexual and reproductive health, quality of life, and overall well-being. The goal is to stimulate and support effective action and interventions to combat endometriosis worldwide, especially in developing countries. What must also be remembered, however, is that more awareness and sensitization to the issue must be created.
